The Most Southern Place on Earth

Right now I am in Cleveland, MS for the National Endowment for the Humanities seminar "The Most Southern Place on Earth."   It's just a pleasure to be a stone's throw away from significant sites in Blues history no matter where you are in the Delta.   I hope to tell y'all more about it later, but I've eaten too much soul food today, and I need my beauty rest.  Okay...it's really my "so I'm not on my last nerve" rest.   Same difference.   Below you will see my lunch and dinner....both which were crying out for a post-meal nap (not part of today's schedule), so now I need to catch some long-awaited Zzzzzz's.

Next time Delta State will offer this seminar will be in 2013, so plan on applying.   Last year the deadlines for most applications were in March.   You will not be disappointed.

On Highway 61

Remember a couple of months back when I tried to get you to hit the road?   We were talking about the Landmarks of American History and Culture Workshops sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities.   In particular, I was trying to make my way to the Delta...to the most southern place on earth.   Cleveland, Mississippi.

I'm on the short list, y'all.

It sounds like a week full of hard work at Delta State, but I'm looking forward to being in the birthplace of the blues.   BBQ, tamales, Koolickles, The Fighting Okra, Stax Records, Po Monkey's Lounge, catfish, and so on.

And he's not on the itinerary, but guess who was born in nearby Leland, Mississippi.
Kermit. The. Frog.

I've not had a mind or the money to scoot down highway 61 before now, but I'm looking forward to my first visit to M-I-S-S-I-S-S-I-P-P-I.

And $30 for some graduate credit/ recertification points?
Thanks, DSU!

Travel the World with the National Endowment for the Humanities

If you're a teacher, you're a lifelong learner with a insatiable curiosity about the world.   If you're a teacher, chances are you spend much of your "vacation" time working to afford your day job.   How are you going to finance the trips of your dreams?   Hooray for the National Endowment for the Humanities!

Once again they have a list of fascinating summer offerings for teachers through their Landmarks of American History and Culture workshops.

Application packets must be postmarked by March 1.   Please read the specific requirements for the seminar of your choice.   Scholars who complete the programs are eligible for a $1,200 stipend.   This should help put a dent in your travel expenses.   Recertification/ graduate credit can also be yours for a little extra cash.

Where am I trying to go?  To the most southern place on earth.   You better believe it!   Cleveland, Mississippi.   Go Fightin' Okra!   Will I get chosen to travel to the birthplace of the blues?   Haw, haw, haw, haw.   I sure hope so.

If you have more time to spare this summer, explore the NEH's summer seminars.   Stipends are based on the length of the coursework, and the deadline for applications is also March 1.
